MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Officials in northern Iowa opted not to hire any of the five finalists for city administrator after an extensive search.
Mason City Council members decided not to move forward with any of the final candidates for the vacant position and notified the finalists Wednesday.
Mayor Bill Schickel told The Globe Gazette that council members didn’t reach a consensus regarding one candidate after discussing the opening over the past few months.
“We thank the finalists for their interest and believe they have outstanding qualifications, but are not a right fit for Mason City at this time,” said Schickel in a statement.
“Fortunately we have an outstanding Interim City Administrator and staff so we are in a good position,” he said.
Schickel also said city officials will look into more search options to find finalists, which may be decided by the next city council meeting.
The council is paying two men with city administrator experience a $6,000 fee to lead the search. In response to questions of residents negatively responding to city spending on the search, Schickel said the council is looking for the most suitable person for the city.
“What the city council tries to do is in the best interest in Mason City,” he said. “I think the council has been very deliberate about it.”
