BOSTON (AP) - A barge that supports the Harvard Sailing Center is sinking.
The Boston Globe reports that the Harvard Sailing Center began partially sinking into the Charles River during Thursday’s powerful nor’easter.
The two-story center is used by the Crimson Sailing Academy at Harvard University to store boats and equipment. State Police were alerted Thursday that it was dipping into the river.
The sailing center sits on top of a barge. Harvard Athletics Director Bob Scalise says the center was compromised due to an apparent failure of the flotation device.
One lane of Memorial Drive was closed while firefighters worked to secure the building.
The center also houses a classroom, locker rooms and kitchenette.
