CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Police say a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand when he was left in a vehicle with access to a loaded gun in northwest Georgia.

Cartersville police Lt. Michael Bettikofer tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the boy was left inside the vehicle, along with four other children, on Sunday outside a house in Cartersville.

The Daily Tribune News reports that the wounded boy was taken to a medical facility and received treatment for what authorities describe as an injury that’s not life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

Police say the boy’s mother was later arrested on charges unrelated to the shooting, and that their investigation of the gunfire is ongoing.

Carterville is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) northwest of Atlanta.
