President Trump said Tuesday that Russian meddling didn’t affect the 2016 presidential election “whatsoever,” but said his administration is exploring voting safeguards including paper-ballot backup systems.
“The Russians had no impact on our votes whatsoever,” Mr. Trump said at a White House news conference. “But certainly there was meddling and there was probably meddling from other countries and maybe other individuals.”
Asked if he is worried about Moscow interfering in the 2018 midterm elections, Mr. Trump said, “We will counteract whatever they do. We won’t allow that to happen.”
He said his administration is conducting “a very deep study” on how to protect U.S. elections from interference.
“It’s called paper,” Mr. Trump said. “Not highly complex computers. We haven’t been given credit for this, but we’ve been working very hard on [protecting] the 18 elections and the 20 elections.”
