The White House on Monday played down the rift between President Trump and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan over the president’s plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The two Republican leaders don’t have to “agree on everything,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Mr. Ryan came out forcefully against Mr. Trump’s plan to slap tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, saying it threatened to undermine the economic boost from the tax cuts.

“Look, we have a great relationship with Speaker Ryan,” Mrs. Sanders said. “We will continue to have one but that doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything.”

Earlier, Mr. Trump said that he wouldn’t back down from his campaign promise to impose tariffs to help vital U.S. industries and American workers, regardless of opposition from Mr. Ryan.
