PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Utility crews are trying to restore power to Rhode Island residents still in the dark after the powerful nor’easter that pummeled the region with hurricane-force wind gusts and coastal flooding.

At midday on Sunday, National Grid said about 31,000 customers without power and hoped to have everyone back on line by Monday. The utility said 500 line crews were working around the clock to fix the damage caused by the storm.

Parts of the state received more than 3 inches of rain in Friday’s storm. Police said a Newport man, 72-year-old Robert Beaver, was struck and killed by a falling tree limb at the height of the storm.

A coastal flood advisory for much of the state expired on Sunday morning and ferry service to Block Island had resumed.
