DENNING, N.Y. (AP) - New York environmental officials are proposing a permit system for a highly popular Catskill Mountain swimming hole.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation on Thursday proposed a free, day-use permitting system for Blue Hole on summer weekends and holidays. Officials say they want to ensure access to the popular swimming spot in the Ulster County town of Denning while reducing environmental damage and keeping the public safe.
The area sometimes called Peekamoose Blue Hole has always been popular, but crowds started coming in 2015 after social media and websites touted it as a top swimming hole in the nation.
The agency is accepting comments on the proposed permitting system through May 28.
Officials already limit parking and restrict hours of operation.
