NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Tebow has been promoted to Double-A after going 1 for 18 with 11 strikeouts in big league spring training for the New York Mets.
The Mets said Wednesday that the outfielder has been assigned to start the season at Binghamton of the Eastern League. The Rumble Ponies open their season at home on April 5 against Portland.
The 30-year-old Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback, split last season between a pair of Class A teams, Columbia, South Carolina, and St. Lucie. He hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games.
Tebow, who is not on the Mets’ 40-man major league roster, was hampered during spring training by a left ankle sprain.
