The late University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias, longtime NBA player Grant Hill and former Washington Capitals winger Peter Bondra were named to the Washington DC Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 on Tuesday.
The class of 10 inductees will be honored May 6 at Nationals Park prior to a Washington Nationals game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The full class is as follows:
- Marty Aronoff, longtime Washington Wizards statistician
- Len Bias, late University of Maryland basketball star
- Peter Bondra, former Washington Capitals winger
- Steve Buckhantz, longtime Washington Wizards play-by-play broadcaster
- Grant Hill, former Duke University and NBA star
- Jaime Moreno, former D.C. United striker
- Buddy Myer, Washington Senators second baseman
- David Poile, former Washington Capitals general manager
- Eleni Rossides, Washington Tennis and Education Foundation executive
- Walt Williams, former University of Maryland and NBA star
Bias set 15 school records during his Maryland career and is the third-leading scorer in program history. He died two days after being drafted second overall in the 1986 NBA Draft when a cocaine overdose sent him into cardiac arrhythmia.
The nominees were selected for having “gained prominence in the Washington area,” according to the Hall of Fame’s press release. For instance, Hill did not play collegiately or professionally in the area but is a native of Reston, Virginia, and starred in high school there.
