SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A California man has pleaded guilty to three counts of murder in the stabbing deaths of his sister-in-law and her two toddlers.
The Sacramento Bee reports that Grigoriy Bukhantsov entered the plea on Tuesday as part of a deal with prosecutors that would spare him the death penalty and instead send him to prison for life.
Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Donell Slivka said Bukhantsov’s family did not want the death penalty.
Bukhantsov was 19 years old when his brother’s family took him in for the night in October 2012. Prosecutors say he attacked his sister-in-law, Alina Bukhantsov, her 3-year-old daughter, Emmanuela, and her 2-year-old son, Avner, the next morning as they sat down for breakfast.
Grigoriy Bukhantsov’s attorneys have said their client had psychological problems.
