PROVIDENCE. R.I. (AP) - A local man is indicted in an alleged tax scheme for thwarting IRS efforts to collect taxes on hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Scituate resident Billie Schofield is indicted for failing to comply with IRS efforts to collect taxes by folding false income tax returns. He also allegedly sent bogus checks to the IRS in an attempt to pay off an IRS lien on his property.
Schofield gave false testimony before a grand jury in response to questions about checks that were drawn on a closed bank account he submitted to the IRS. According to the indictment, Schofield earned unreported income working for local fishing companies from 2006 to 2016.
He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison if convicted.
