The Washington Redskins agreed to a deal with outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, the team announced Monday.
McPhee will give the Redskins a rotational pass rusher, a position the team needed to fill after Trent Murphy signed with the Buffalo Bills. The Redskins, per reports, also don’t plan to bring back outside linebacker Junior Galette.
McPhee spent the last three years with the Chicago Bears. The 29-year-old has dealt with injuries throughout his career, appearing in just 22 of 32 games over the last two seasons. He had knee surgery last offseason.
But McPhee was an efficient pass rusher in Chicago. He recorded four sacks despite playing just 44 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps.
Drafted in 2011, the former fifth-rounder spent the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens. He signed a five-year, $39 million with the Bears in 2015, but was released two years into the deal.
In Washington, McPhee will back up linebackers Preston Smith and Ryan Kerrigan. The Redskins also has 2017 second-rounder Ryan Anderson at the position.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
