LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Latest on student-led protests against gun violence in California (all times local):

3:30 p.m.

Thousands of people are marching through San Francisco for the “March for Our Lives” rally to demand stricter gun laws in the U.S.

Demonstrators at Saturday’s rally held cheered as they marched down Market Street.

One sign read: “Arms are for hugging, not hurting.”

Rallies in Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego drew thousands of demonstrators on Saturday.

Similar events were being held in cities across America on Saturday to march for gun control and ignite political activism among teenagers.

10:45 a.m.

Tens of thousands of people are marching through the streets of Los Angeles as part of the “March for Our Lives” rally to demand stricter gun laws in America.

The group was marching Saturday morning to Los Angeles City Hall.

Zoe Lopez, a 15-year-old high school freshman from Garden Grove, said she’s attending the rally demand additional regulations on gun purchases.

A handful of counter-protesters assembled outside Los Angeles police headquarters. One demonstrator, wearing an NRA baseball cap, held a sign with a photo of a handgun that read: “Defend the right!”

Thousands of people have started marching through the streets of Sacramento to the state’s capitol to demand changes to America’s gun laws.

They chanted: “What do we want? Gun control!”

Similar “March for Our Lives” rallies were being held in cities across America on Saturday to march for gun control and ignite political activism among the young.

Police shut down several streets near the capitol in Sacramento as marchers streamed through the streets holding signs.

They also chanted: “End the violence” and “Hey, hey, ho, ho, the NRA has got to go.”

Hundreds of people have gathered in Oakland at a “March for Our Lives” rally to call for stricter gun laws in the U.S.

The group gathered Saturday morning at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland.

Demonstrators sang, clapped and chanted as speakers called for a “culture of kindness and resistance.”

Organizers for the event said they planned to join a larger protest in San Francisco that’s planned for Saturday afternoon.

Rallies were expected across California and in hundreds of cities across the U.S. on Saturday.

9 a.m.

Hundreds of people are assembling in downtown Los Angeles to demand stricter gun laws in the U.S. after a shooting last month at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to march Saturday to Los Angeles City Hall for the “March for Our Lives” rally.

Demonstrators held signs that read: “Take away guns from those who take lives” and “Fix this before I have to text my mom from under my desk.”

Similar rallies were being held in cities across America to march for gun control and ignite political activism among teenagers.

In San Diego, several dozen people began assembling early ahead of a march planned for 10 a.m.

One teenager held a sign that read: “Make our schools safe again.”
