MERLIN, Ore. (AP) - The Josephine County Board of Commissioners has delayed a $638,000 project to install sidewalks in Merlin, a small town near the Rogue River.

The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports at least 20 people strongly objected to the work at a board meeting Wednesday. They said hardly anyone walks through town, and sidewalks would take away parking spots.

One store owner told commissioners that she uses her car to visit the restaurant across the street.

The newspaper reports a few pedestrians did cross the road at midday on Wednesday, and there was a jogger.

In addition to concern about lack of parking, opponents said they didn’t get sufficient notice about the proposal.

Commissioners tabled the matter pending further outreach.
