ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland has joined Virginia and Washington in committing to provide annual funding for Metro.
The Washington Post reports that Maryland’s assent would give the system a reliable revenue stream for the first time since its trains hit the tracks in 1976.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., D-Calvert, said Thursday that his chamber would approve Maryland’s $167 million share of the total $500 million cost. House Speaker Michael E. Busch, D-Anne Arundel, and Republican Gov. Larry Hogan immediately endorsed the move.
The Senate will now hold it’s hearing on the funding bill Tuesday to get it through the full Senate by the end of the week.
Despite the new dedicated funding, the Metro says it will still need $150 million annually from the federal government.
