LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials of a southern Nevada school district have agreed to begin drafting a policy on protecting gender-diverse students.
The Las Vegas Sun reports the Clark County School Board voted 4-3 to begin the process of developing a policy during its nearly six-hour meeting Thursday.
About 200 people gave comments to the board, voicing their views on issues such as how gender-diverse students access school restrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations for field trips.
People opposing a policy cited religious concerns and say the current district rules on bullying are sufficient to protect students.
Those advocating for a policy say the district’s current guidelines are not enough and schools lack a uniform policy to address the unique issues gender-diverse students may face.
