OPINION:
President Donald Trump told Republicans during a recent party fundraising dinner that the way to win big at the ballot box was to go right — politically speaking, that is.
In other words, he cautioned: Don’t cave on the conservative principle.
He’s absolutely correct.
Too often, worried Republicans fall prey to that tired line of the mainstream media and the left — forgive the redundancy — and, come campaign season, dabble in the middle, wander toward liberal land, trot out the conciliatory talk and fake like a Democrat. Some even attack their own. They begin bashing the hands that fed them.
But in so doing, they forget Republican voters don’t want Democrats.
Meanwhile, the Democrats, ever vigilant, sensing fear, pull their own party to the left, from simply liberal to all-out socialist — along with the middle ground, mind you.
“They have gone so far left, we have to go a little bit further right,” Trump told National Republican Congressional Committee donors, Breitbart reported.
That’s just to ultimately land in the middle.
“These days,” he went on, “there’s no such thing as a Blue Dog Democrat, a red state Democrat or a conservative Democrat because they are all Pelosi Democrats … way outside of the American mainstream.”
Yet their constant yapping has made even a moderate Republican seem a radical character.
So Trump’s solution?
Stand strong — and be a conservative, for crying out loud.
Good advice — from a guy who bucked the normal political processes. And won.
