NEW YORK (AP) - The fourth nor’easter in three weeks is expected to dump about a foot of snow in New York City and western Long Island before it moves out of the area by daybreak.

The storm began Wednesday morning as “mixed precipitation” before changing to heavy, wet snow. Thousands of flights were canceled at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports.

Weather officials say the northern suburbs and eastern Long Island will see about 8 to 12 inches of snow. A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.

On Long Island, slick roads were a factor in an auto crash that killed a woman.

By 9 p.m. Wednesday almost 7 inches of snow had fallen in New York’s Central Park.

New York City public schools will be open on Thursday.
