SILVER SUMMIT, Utah (AP) - A Utah man convicted in the 2016 fatal shooting of another man has been sentenced to up to life in prison.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports 29-year-old Midvale resident James Enoch Henfling was sentenced Monday to 16 years to life in prison in the death of Jose Fernandez. A jury last year convicted Henfling of murder and felony discharge of a weapon.

The newspaper reports Henfling shot Fernandez in the head on February 2016 as he was lying on his back at home after a night of drinking.

Henfling told police he and Fernandez had an altercation and started punching and choking each other. Court records show he later told authorities he “should have shot” Fernandez in the foot or hand, but that “being a hunter, you shoot to kill.”
