SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski has signed a policy that aims to ensure that all city employees receive fair pay regardless of gender.

The Deseret News reports under the new policy, which took effect Thursday, the city’s human resources department will need to conduct regular audits on gender pay equity.

The policy states that hiring, promotions and pay increase decisions cannot be based on a person’s gender.

As part of the policy, interviewers will not be allowed to ask job candidates about their current or past salary history.

Biskupski says a recent report found that Salt Lake City female government employees are paid 93 percent of what men are paid in the same job.
