WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland’s prime minister says the defense ministry will explain the substantial amounts of money spent through its government-issued credit and debit cards under the previous minister.
Opposition lawmakers demanded on Friday a detailed list of the charges from the ministry’s more than 832 cards, which totaled some 15 million zlotys ($4.4 million) during 2016 and the first half of 2017. Then-Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz was dismissed in January in a larger government reshuffle.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the sums are substantial and the new defense minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, will research how they compare to the ministry’s earlier spending. Blaszczak has cut the number of cards used by ministry employees.
Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party says it supports transparency and economic restraint.
