ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland high school teacher is suing her local teacher’s union for defamation and breach of contract.

The Capital reported Thursday Annapolis High School science teacher Sharon Moesel filed the lawsuit against the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County on Jan. 27, alleging the union tried to silence her and ostracize her from colleagues.

The union expelled Moesel in May 2017, saying she used her position as an association representative to further her personal agenda and ingratiate herself with County Executive Steve Schuh.

Moesel denied the allegations, and is also appealing the expulsion, which the Maryland Public School Labor Relations Board is reviewing. The lawsuit is in abeyance until that hearing.

TAAAC Executive Director Bill Jones says the union will file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, which seeks $250,000.
