TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Environmental groups are taking their opposition to New Jersey’s $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil to the state Supreme Court.
The groups filed their intent to appeal to the high court on Thursday.
The filing on behalf of New Jersey Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, Environment New Jersey, Delaware Riverkeeper Network and Delaware Riverkeeper come after an appellate court ruled against them last month.
The groups say that then-Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, settled in 2015 for “pennies on the dollar” over years of pollution at two refinery sites. Earlier state estimates put damages at $8.9 billion.
An appeals court said the trial judge was correct to approve the $225 million settlement.
A spokeswoman for Exxon said the Irving, Texas-based company would respond in court. State lawyers declined to comment.
The Supreme Court declined comment on the petition.
