Sen. Chris Murphy, a noted critic of President Trump, said Friday the president led a national change in the conversation on guns.
“Trump may not end up leading Congressional Republicans to water on guns, but his willingness to buck the gun lobby in public, rule out the NRA agenda, and talk up background checks, has changed this debate nationally,” the Connecticut Democrat tweeted.
The issue of gun violence is one Mr. Murphy has been vocal about since his state experienced its own tragedy in 2012 with the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, in which 20 young students and six adults were killed.
He co-sponsored the so-called Cornyn-Murphy plan, also known as the “Fix NICS” bill, that aims to better integrate the criminal background check system with the background check required to purchase a firearm. Mr. Trump supports the bill, and said that he wants to see the issue of gun violence in schools addressed in a bill soon.
