BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore will expand its speed and red light camera system, nearly doubling the size of the program that has brought in a combined $12 million in fines since its reinstatement last August.
The Baltimore Sun cites a Friday statement from the Department of Transportation that says it’s adding 44 cameras across Baltimore, bringing the total number of cameras to 100. The additions include 19 speed cameras, 19 red light cameras and six cameras designed to catch large trucks on forbidden roads.
The cameras will be activated March 19, after the mandatory two-week warning period.
The system’s director, Robert Liberati, says the city has received a lot of requests for cameras to cut down on reckless and negligent driving.
Baltimore’s previous 160-camera system was shut down in 2016 amid accuracy concerns.
