AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine Department of Labor has not yet responded to charges that claim a new unemployment filing system is a “failure” that’s been costly to taxpayers and recipients.

The Morning Sentinel reports an internal department memo alleged officials rushed out a faulty unemployment filing system. Recipients of benefits have complained of being locked out the computer system, and of delayed payments.

The unemployment system software was developed by Tata Consulting Services, a multinational information technology company that is a subsidiary to an India-based global conglomerate.

Democratic state Sen. Shenna Bellows said Friday that legislators had not yet heard from the department in regards to the charges. The state Legislature’s Committee on Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development will meet again Tuesday in Augusta.
