SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The National Weather Service says the heavy recent snow has increased the risk of open water flooding this spring along rivers and streams in parts of Vermont and upstate New York.

In a report issued Thursday by the service’s South Burlington office, the spring flood outlook is now considered to be above normal.

Due to the recent storms, the amount of snow on the ground in the Champlain Valley of Vermont has increased from mostly bare ground to snow depths of between 10 and 20 inches. On Mount Mansfield, snow depths of up to 7 feet are reported.

While the risk of open water flooding has increased, the weather service says the risk of flooding from ice jams has decreased because river ice is melting.
