WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - No. 3 seed Michigan (29-7) vs. No. 6 Houston (27-7)
Second round, Midwest Region; Wichita, Kansas, Saturday, 9:40 p.m. ET.
BOTTOM LINE: The Wolverines, who plodded through an ugly win over Montana in the opening round, will try to advance to their fourth Sweet 16 under John Beilein when they face Houston. That would tie Beilein with Steve Fisher for the most in school history.
WAKE UP, WAGNER: Wolverines star Moe Wagner was held scoreless in the first half by Montana, and finished with five points and six boards in 32 minutes. He’ll need to do more against Houston.
PHI SLAMMA SHOOTA: The last time Houston reached the Sweet 16, it was the Phi Slama Jama teams of the early 1980s. But this team relies on shooting rather than a big man like Hakeem Olajuwon.
GRAY AREA: Cougars guard Rob Gray poured in 39 points in their win over San Diego State in the first round. It was the most for a Houston player in the NCAA Tournament since Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes had 39 against TCU in the 1968 regional finals.
DID YOU KNOW: Houston coach Kelvin Sampson should be somewhat familiar with Michigan, having spent two seasons at Big Ten rival Indiana. He was forced to resign in February 2008 amid allegations of NCAA violations that resulted in a five-year show-cause penalty.
