PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A new study has concluded Cumberland County is the healthiest locality in Maine and Washington County is the least.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute released the ninth annual County Health Rankings on Wednesday.
The study looked at data including tobacco use, access to care, education, housing and transit, and air and water quality.
About 20 percent of Maine adults are current smokers, compared with 17 percent nationally.
The study finds Washington County has higher percentages of adult smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, teen births and uninsured individuals than the nation.
The study also finds 28 percent of Washington County children live in poverty, compared with about 20 percent nationally.
