NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - With foul weather forecast for the Massachusetts coast this coming weekend, smiling Irish eyes won’t find the USS Cole at Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

The Virginian-Pilot reports Naval Surface Force Atlantic spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson says wintry weather in New England kept the Norfolk-based destroyer from sailing to Boston for one of the country’s largest St. Patrick’s Day festivals. The ship would have arrived Friday.

Allied War Veterans Council of South Boston Council Commander David Falvey had earlier told The Boston Herald that Sunday’s parade was also meant to celebrate Evacuation Day, a holiday marking the British evacuation of Boston during the Revolutionary War. He said the USS Cole was an apt symbol to honor the military, as the target of a deadly 2000 terror attack.
