Former Washington Redskins center Spencer Long will sign with the New York Jets, according to multiple reports.
Long, a 2014 third-round pick, spent the last four years in Washington, starting 31 of his 40 games. The Nebraska product played the majority of those games as center, but filled in at left guard during the 2015 season.
Last season, Long was plagued by injuries. He was hurt in the preseason, missing Week 1, and dealt with quad tendonitis throughout the year. The Redskins shut Long down in November, placing him on injured reserve. He played a total of seven games, starting six of them.
In Long’s absence, rookie Chase Roullier emerged as a solid replacement. Roullier, a sixth-round pick from Wyoming, is expected to be the Redskins’ starting center moving forward.
But with Long leaving for the Jets, the Redskins will need to find a new starting left guard. Long, according to reports, will play center in New York. If he had re-signed with the Redskins, he most likely would have slotted in at guard.
