MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island police officer who was arrested last year on a domestic assault charge has been accused of fraud.

The Providence Journal reports Middletown police Lt. Richard Gamache was arrested Monday at his home. Gamache entered no plea to 12 counts of damaging a public computer and seven counts of accessing a computer for fraudulent purposes. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of giving a false document to an agent.

Middletown police say they can’t elaborate on the case details because of the police officer’s Bill of Rights.

Gamache’s attorney, Cort Chappell, says the timing of the charges is questionable.

Gamache has been suspended with pay since being arrested for domestic assault in October. Prosecutors dropped the case because the alleged victim declined to testify.
