Cornerback Bashaud Breeland will be leaving the Washington Redskins for the Carolina Panthers, agreeing Tuesday to a three-year, $24 million deal with $11 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.
Breeland, 26, spent the last four seasons in Washington after being a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. After a promising 2015 season, Breeland was inconsistent in his two years opposite of Josh Norman. He started 15 games last season.
His absence leaves a void at corner for the Redskins. Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau are expected to compete for Breeland’s starting role.
Dunbar, a wide receiver turned corner, has experience starting on the outside, filling in while Norman was out with a rib injury last season. The Redskins are high on Dunbar, giving him a three-year extension in January.
Moreau, the Redskins’ third-round pick in 2017 out of UCLA, saw little action on the defensive side of the ball, but made an impact on special teams. The Redskins like his size and speed, saying he improved as the season went along. The UCLA product missed time last offseason, recovering from a torn pectoral.
The Redskins also need to add a nickel cornerback after including Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade in January.
Breeland will join a Panthers team that went 11-5 in 2017. He is expected to be their No. 2 corner, replacing Daryl Worley.
The deal can become official Wednesday.
