VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A longtime prosecutor has been fired for allegedly mishandling a criminal case in Virginia.

The Virginian-Pilot quotes Commonwealth’s Attorney spokeswoman Macie Allen as saying that Scott Vachris was fired from the Virginia Beach prosecutor’s office on Wednesday. She declined to provide additional details, citing the case’s pending status.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle named Vachris as his chief deputy when he was elected in 2013. Allen says Stolle was the one who fired him.

Stolle declined to comment to the newspaper Thursday, and Vachris couldn’t be reached for comment.

The 55-year-old had been with the Virginia Beach prosecutor’s office for around two decades, and had previously served as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Portsmouth.
