CHICAGO (AP) - A concert at a South Side church with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and cellist Yo-Yo Ma will also feature song written by parents who have lost children to gun violence.
The Concert for Peace on Sunday afternoon at the St. Sabina Church is part of an effort over several years by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association to engage communities in lower income neighborhoods.
Chicago registered around 650 homicides last year - more than in Los Angeles and New York City combined.
The parents whose children were killed worked with composer Josh Fink. The concert grew out of cooperation with Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church, CSO musical director Riccardo Muti, Yo-Yo Ma and others. Yo-Yo Ma has served as a creative consultant to the CSO since 2010.
