ATLANTA (AP) - Federal officials say treatment is underway to clean up contaminants in the groundwater and soil at a North Carolina Superfund site.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a news release Friday a 1.2-acre area beneath the former CTS Corp. factory in Asheville is being treated.
Solvents used to make electronic components contaminated the CTS site with the cancer-causing trichloroethylene, or TCE. The land adjacent to the old factory was to be the site of an upscale subdivision outside Asheville. In an adjacent neighborhood in Skyland, at least three families were urged to abandon their home as officials cited unsafe levels of TCE. They were allowed to return.
In 2012, the EPA named the 9 acres beneath and immediately around the factory among the nation’s worst abandoned hazardous waste sites.
