Pitching eight years to the day of his Major League debut, Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg was taken out after throwing just two innings Friday night at Nationals Park against the San Francisco Giants.
There was no immediate information on Strasburg’s health. The Nationals do not normally give out possible injury information on their players during games.
Strasburg trailed 3-0 after two innings as he gave up five hits. He threw a 97 mile-per-hour pitch with two outs in first that Andrew McCutchen hit for a home run.
Alen Hanson had an RBI single in the second and Hunter Pence followed with an RBI double to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
Strasburg threw 35 pitches and was replaced by Shawn Kelley in the top of the third. Strasburg has made more than 30 starts just once in his career – a high of 34 in 2014.
The No. 1 overall pick in 2009 out of San Diego State, he was shut down during the 2012 postseason after going through Tommy John surgery.
Strasburg was 15-4 last season with an ERA of 2.52 in 28 starts, and was 6-5 with an ERA of 3.20 in 12 starts this year before Friday. He made his big league debut June 8, 2010 at Nationals Park by fanning 14 Pittsburgh batters in seven innings.
The Nationals (35-25) entered Friday tied for first in the National League East with Atlanta.
