MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife of more than 20 years, whose body was doused in gasoline after she was stabbed numerous times.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports 62-year-old Darryl Chandler pleaded guilty Monday to malice murder and other crimes in Cobb County Superior Court.

His wife, Brenda Poole Chandler, was found dead on Dec. 12, 2016, at the couple’s Kennesaw home. Prosecutors say Darryl Chandler confessed to striking his wife in the head with a blunt object before mutilating her body with a knife. Police found the body doused in gasoline and two lighters in the husband’s pocket when they arrested him.

Authorities say neighbors called for help after smelling a strong odor of gas from the house.
