WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Delaware police chief is accused of crashing his police vehicle into the department’s parking lot and failing to report the collision.

The News Journal of Wilmington reported Wednesday that Newport Police Chief Michael Capriglione was indicted by a grand jury on several charges including tampering with physical evidence.

Department of Justice spokesman Carl Kanefsky says Capriglione is accused of striking the other vehicle May 19 and failing to report the collision to the owner or any authority before taking additional steps to avoid detection.

Mayor Michael Spencer says Capriglione was put on paid suspension around May 25 while the investigation was underway.

Capriglione’s attorney, James Liguori, declined to comment specifically on the charges against his client, but said it involves the issues of a motor-vehicle matter.
