BALTIMORE (AP) - A construction worker who was buried when a trench collapsed has died in Baltimore.

Baltimore Fire Department spokeswoman Blair Skinner tells news outlets that the 19-year-old man was a contract employee working on a sewer line at Clifton Park on Tuesday. She said he was inside a 15-foot-deep (4-meter-deep) trench that wasn’t properly shored up, and a pile of dirt and debris caved in on top of him.

Rescue efforts begin around 3:30 p.m. and his body was recovered shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The rescue search was complicated by both rain and water from the sewer inside the trench. The man’s coworkers assisted with recovery efforts.

Mayor Catherine Pugh and other city representatives were at the scene.

The man has not been identified. Skinner would not identify his employer.
