PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of a national teacher’s union will visit two schools in Providence as tensions mount between educators and Mayor Jorge Elorza.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, will visit the schools Thursday to help push the passage of a $250 million package to renovate and rebuild the state’s public schools.
The Providence Journal reports Mount Pleasant High School and Pleasant View Elementary, both schools Weingarten will visit, are slated for improvements if the bond passes.
The Providence Teachers Union is in the middle of stalled contract negotiations. Negotiations stopped moving forward in January because the union is pressing for pay raises, which the city has said it can’t afford. The contract expired Aug. 31, 2017.
