Tiger Woods made an early charge up the leaderboard Saturday as he birdied four straight holes on the front nine, but couldn’t keep the momentum going as he came home in one-over 37 for a 68 that put him six shots behind leader Abraham Ancer.
Woods got off to a rough start, bogeying the opening hole before righting the ship with birdies at the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh holes to get within a shot of the lead. After a bogey at the eighth, Woods added another birdie at the ninth and made the turn at three-under on the day.
Woods putter betrayed him on the back nine, however, as he missed short birdie putts at 10 and 11 before and dropped a shot with a bogey at 13. Another bogey on 18 meant it all added up to a disappointing round of 68. Woods currently sits six shots behind leader Abraham Ancer.
“It was frustrating because I played better than what my score indicates,” Woods said. “I know I got off to a rough start bogeying 1 and very easily could have bogeyed 3, but then to get it to 3 under par for the day by the turn and I had some birdie opportunities on the back nine, didn’t make them and made a couple bogeys there, too, as well.”
