SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A U.S. Supreme Court ruling barring administrative union fees from non-union members means Illinois health care workers will get a chance to claw back $32 million they’ve paid.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the high court ordered Thursday that the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals reconsider its ruling that 80,000 workers could not recoup so-called fair-share fees from the Service Employees International Union.
The court found that three caretakers of disabled people in their homes who filed the lawsuit could get back money paid from 2008 to 2014. But it rejected a class-action claim because not everyone had objected to paying the fees.
The Supreme Court’s decree Wednesday rejecting fair share fees in a case involving an Illinois government worker prompted the health care case revival.
