T.J. Oshie and Matt Niskanen heard it might be hard to get into town the day of the Washington Capitals’ Game 3 against the Vegas Golden Knights. After all, the fanfare of a Stanley Cup Final coming to town is accompanied by logistical hassles like road closures.
So rather than driving or trying to hail an Uber, Oshie and Niskanen took the Metro into Washington on Saturday.
“Nisky’s done it a couple more times than me. That was actually my first one heading down to the game,” Oshie said. “We heard it might be tough to get to the game.”
Oshie, who has played for the Capitals since 2015, said he doesn’t “know any of the stops.” Niskanen declined to say where they got on.
“I don’t want to give away our location, but there’s a stop somewhat near our house,” Niskanen said. “And we live in the state of Virginia.”
The defenseman added that they took a train on the “orange or silver” line.
Parts of F, G and 6th streets will be closed until June 11 to account for the possibility of Capital One Arena hosting a Game 6 on June 10. Several more streets around the arena were shut down Saturday.
Despite the closures, “some of the guys said it was actually the fastest they’ve ever gotten there,” Oshie said.
Niskanen and Oshie have not talked about whether they will take the Metro again. Since the Capitals won Game 3, and because hockey players are famously superstitious, they might consider it.
“It was great. It was actually really easy for us to get down there,” Oshie said. “Fans seemed very excited, but were also very respectful.”
