SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man died after being rescued from the American River in downtown Sacramento during an attempt to escape police.

The Sacramento Bee reports Sacramento Police Detective Eddie Macaulay says officers responded Saturday morning to a call of a man acting erratically.

Authorities say when officers tried to make contact with the man, he took off on foot, jumped into the river and swam downstream. Macaulay says officers tried to get him to come ashore, but the man refused and then was seen going underwater.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Capt. Keith Wade says a rescue crew pulled the man out of water and performed life-saving measures.

Macaulay says the man later was pronounced dead at the hospital.
