Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praised his wife Thursday night, celebrating her response to protesters on Georgetown University’s campus earlier this week.
“I’ve got one tough wife. I’m really proud of her,” he said during an interview on “Fox News @ Night.”
Mr. McConnell explained that he advised Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to “just quietly” get in the car when a handful of protesters approached them as the couple left a Georgetown event.
The group of at least six students played ProPublica audio of migrant children caught up in the family separation crisis crying as they peppered the two with questions.
“Why are you separating families?” one asked.

One of the protesters, Roberto, took to Twitter to explain their side of the situation and called for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be abolished.
We asked why they were separating families and Elaine L. Chao started yelling at us to leave her husband alone. My question is why they won’t leave our families, friends and communities alone? As my friend said, “how do you sleep at night?” #FreedomForImmigrants

Mr. McConnell and Ms. Chao were confronted in Georgetown’s red square, one of the university’s dedicated free-speech zones.
“I do think poor behavior is not a great way to convey your views,” the senator said, “but I do think everybody ought to have their fair say.”
