SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A Spokane dentist who received media attention for saving a man’s life in a car crash last year has been indicted on federal drug charges.
The Spokesman-Review reports that Dr. James S. Shelby of Spokane was indicted on 31 counts of conspiracy and distribution of prescription drugs.
The indictment filed June 19 says Shelby wrote hundreds of prescriptions for hydrocodone and another narcotic to two people, including a co-defendant.
Shelby told the newspaper that the situation was complicated and referred comment to his lawyer. The lawyer’s firm, Winston & Cashatt, said Wednesday that Shelby is working with federal investigators and they were disappointed federal prosecutors decided to pursue criminal charges.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Harrington could not immediately be reached Wednesday.
Last year, Shelby used a belt to stop a motorcyclist from bleeding when he was injured in a hit-and-run crash.
