SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Eleven people are in custody after police in western Massachusetts broke up what a prosecutor calls a “high level” heroin trafficking operation.

Masslive.com reports authorities seized 6,700 bags of heroin, about $73,000 in cash, three vehicles and three handguns while executing search warrants earlier this week in Springfield and West Springfield.

All of the suspects live in Springfield and face a variety of drug and weapons charges.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni says the firearms were loaded and “in a position to fire” when police seized them.

Gulluni says the arrests follow an investigation that took months and involved “sophisticated surveillance techniques and hundreds of man-hours.”
