AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. (AP) - Officials in the Spokane suburb of Airway Heights say a new temporary water treatment system will be operating later this summer.
The city has been working to find clean water sources since tests by nearby Fairchild Air Force Base last year found groundwater tainted with two industrial chemicals used for years in firefighting foam and other consumer products. The city went without drinkable tap water for more than 20 days.
Since November, Airway Heights has been relying on water from Spokane as it works to find a long-term solution.
KHQ-TV reports that the Air Force is paying for the $2.6 million water system for one of the city’s wells.
The chemicals are believed to have seeped into groundwater from a fire training site on the edge of the base.
