LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Latest on the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (all times local):

Los Angeles has a new police chief.

Longtime Police Department veteran Michel Moore was sworn in by Mayor Eric Garcetti after the City Council voted unanimously to confirm his appointment.

The move was widely expected after Garcetti recommended Moore for the job earlier this month.

Moore replaces Charlie Beck, who retired Wednesday after more than 40 years with the LAPD. Beck became the chief in 2009.

Moore says he wants to build community relations and trust, and increase the diversity within the department to better represent the city, particularly among women and black people.

The Los Angeles City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to confirm Mayor Eric Garcetti’s choice for the next police chief of the nation’s second-largest city.

Garcetti selected Assistant Chief Michel Moore, a 36-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, to replace Chief Charlie Beck, who is retiring Wednesday after more than 40 years with the LAPD.

Beck has been chief since 2009.

The confirmation process for Moore begins with a meeting of the City Council’s public safety committee then a meeting of the full council Wednesday.
